Daily Tools

Extensions of Ourselves

Every day we reach for dozens of objects without thinking — a knife to slice bread, a pen to make notes, scissors to open packaging. These tools are so integrated into our lives that they become invisible, extensions of our hands and intentions.

The Daily Tools program invites participants to pause and notice. We examine the weight of a wooden spoon, the balance of a kitchen knife, the grip of a favorite pen. Through close observation, we discover how design shapes action, and how repeated use creates unique relationships between person and object.

Kitchen Tools

Spatulas, whisks, ladles, and spoons — we explore the specialized implements of food preparation.

Writing Instruments

From fountain pens to mechanical pencils, examining how we extend thought onto paper.

Hand Tools

Hammers, screwdrivers, and measuring tools that help us shape our environment.

Program Structure

Participants begin with a home inventory, documenting the tools they use most frequently. We then move into comparative study, examining how different materials, weights, and ergonomics affect the experience of use.

Through guided observation sessions, we learn to identify quality construction, understand material properties, and appreciate the incremental improvements that separate a good tool from a great one.

What You'll Learn

This program develops your ability to assess tools critically, understanding the relationship between form and function. You'll learn to recognize signs of quality, identify your personal preferences in weight and balance, and understand how tools can be selected to enhance specific tasks.

Beyond the practical, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the design intelligence embedded in everyday objects, and develop mindful practices around tool selection and care.
